Lake Home: Artisans help the Moyers build their dream
By Brooke Weihe

The home's bedroom affords a tranquil view of Lake Norman. Living on the lake was an absolute necessity for the Moyers.

Clark and Kathy Moyer light up when asked about their new home. The couple recently moved into the fifth house they've shared together, and want to tell everyone about not only the fantastic house they now live in, but also the process of building the new abode.

"We did a whole bunch of homework on builders," Clark said, and since he and Kathy had built two prior homes together, they knew what to look for. They stumbled upon Artisan Builders, based out of Davidson, at a home show and met the perfect match.

Clark and Kathy praise what they call "an outstanding group of young builders" at Artisan - Brad Remmey, Jay Johnstone and John Shyrock - with the successful completion of their home.

"This is the third home we have built and this is by far more than we could have ever asked for," said Kathy. "They got it right and the process was stress-free. They are truly in the business of creating dream homes for their customers."

Prior to living on Lake Norman, the Moyers hailed from Akron, Ohio. When relocation to Charlotte came with Clark's position at Continental Tire 10 years ago, the couple had one primary prerequisite in a new home.

"We lived on the lake back in Ohio, so that was always a requirement," Clark explained. He and Kathy looked into both Lake Norman and Lake Wylie, and settled on the northern body of water even though his office was on Westinghouse Boulevard in south Charlotte. They bought a lot and built a home in The Peninsula, in Cornelius.

That neighborhood suited them well for a number of years, but after a while Clark and Kathy yearned for a smaller home, and a less crowded neighborhood. McKendree Road in Mooresville fit those new needs, and they bought a lot of land at the end of the street, in a quiet cul-de-sac. Of course, the land was on the water.

The new home was built in a year, and the Moyers enjoyed the entire process. For the first time, they hired an architect to help - a move they now say they would recommend to anyone.

"They put your thoughts on paper," Kathy said of why working with an architect pays off. Jim Phelps with the Carolina Design Group gets great praise from Clark and Kathy for incorporating all their wishes in a home.

The couple moved in about two months ago and is thrilled with everything around them, from the picture windows looking out on the water to the two bedrooms upstairs decorated just for their two grandchildren. Both Clark and Kathy were able to exercise their own specific passions in designing the home - "He's a ceiling and trim man," Kathy explained, "I'm a decorator."

Artisan's team of builders suited their tendencies, Clark added, saying, "They never said 'no' to any idea."

One example takes up much of the living room. Clark and Kathy took two different magazine living room photos and Artisan Builders incorporated both into one outstanding wooden wall unit, plus built it around the couple's large television and 5-foot-tall model sailboat.

"They did an outstanding job with that," Clark said, "it was all custom."

Nautical themes can be found throughout the Moyer home. Clark and Kathy enjoy not only gazing out at the water, but getting on it with their boat.

Within the house, that hobby is found in various model sailboats, the boating theme in their grandson's bedroom, and a short wooden captain standing guard at the garage door. In fact, one reason the couple bought this piece of land was because it faced the main channel, giving them a great view of boat traffic from almost every room in the house.

"We've been here 10 years, and there are places on the lake we still haven't been to," Clark said. Out on their boat, he said they most enjoy just "cruising and exploring."

In this, their fifth house, the Moyers enjoy waking up every morning to wide open views of Lake Norman, and knowing their home was custom made to fit them perfectly.

Clark sums it up, saying, "I would not change a thing."
